About:

The Rural Surface Transportation Grant Program (RURAL) was created in the BIL and will support project to improve and expand the surface transportation in rural areas to increase connectivity, improve the safety and reliability of the movement of people and freight, and generate regional economic growth and improve quality of life.

 

Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Notice of Funding Opportunity:

The U.S. Department of Transportation published a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for $780 million in grant funding through the RURAL discretionary grant program on March 25, 2024.

  • Public Authority 

  • Federally-Recognized Tribes 

 

Eligible Projects

  • Highway/bridge project eligible under National Highway Performance Program

  • Highway, bridge, or tunnel project eligible under the Surface Transportation Block Grant Program 

  • Highway, bridge, or tunnel project eligible under the Tribal Transportation Program 

  • Highway freight project eligible under the National Highway Freight Program 

  • Highway safety improvement project 

  • Project on a publicly-owned highway/bridge that provides or increase access to facilities that support the economy of a rural area 

  • Project to develop, establish, or maintain an integrated mobility management system, a transportation demand management system, or on-demand mobility services

Funding

  • $780M for FY2024
