This page provides information relating to hazardous materials for the Nebraska Department of Transportation projects. NDOT defines hazardous materials as a broad category of materials that, because of their quantity, concentration, or physical or chemical characteristics, pose a significant present or potential hazard to human health and safety or to the environment if released into the environment. NDOT’s responsibility includes following federal, state and local laws and regulations that apply to hazardous materials. This includes identifying, characterizing and properly managing hazardous materials or petroleum products that could impact our construction projects. It is also important that our Districts and contractors understand the regulations and procedures in responding to and remediating transportation related spills of hazardous waste or petroleum. The links below include guidance and training on hazardous materials assessments and regulations pertaining to hazardous waste and regulated materials management.
