Strategic Highway Safety Plan
Safety Is Our Priority
At NDOT, safety is at the core of everything we do—whether you're driving, working on our roads, or responding to emergencies.
For Drivers
Your safety on Nebraska’s roads is our top priority. NDOT provides tools and resources to help you stay informed and prepared:
-
Road Conditions: Check Nebraska’s 511 system for road conditions.
-
Safety Initiatives: Learn best practices for driving in all weather and reducing distractions.
-
Traveler Resources: Visit our travel page for maps, traffic cams, and safety activities for kids.
For Road Workers & Emergency Responders
Every day, NDOT teams work tirelessly to maintain and improve Nebraska’s roads, often in challenging conditions. Ensuring their safety—and the safety of those who respond to emergencies—is critical.
-
Work Zone Awareness: Slow down and move over for crews working to keep Nebraska moving.
-
Emergency Response Training: NDOT partners with local agencies to prepare for rapid and coordinated responses to incidents on our roads.
Safety Education & Outreach
Education is key to safer roads. NDOT offers programs to promote responsible driving and emergency preparedness.
-
Community & School Outreach: Events to educate drivers about road safety measures, responsible driving habits, weather preparedness, work zone safety, and more!
-
Traffic Incident Management (TIM): Provides emergency responders with resources to coordinate and manage traffic incidents—such as crashes, breakdowns, and debris—using a systematic approach. TIM helps minimize traffic disruptions, enhance safety for responders and travelers, and reduce congestion.
-
Highway Safety Office: Responsible for developing and implementing effective strategies to reduce the state’s traffic-related injury and fatality rates. The HSO is also responsible for the administration of the Federal Highway Safety funds and for facilitating the Highway Safety Programs supported by these funds.
