Roadside Memorials

Any person who is killed as the result of a motor vehicle crash on Nebraska's highway system may be eligible to have a memorial sign erected in their honor. The signs will contain the name of the person being memorialized along with a pre-approved safety message.

Private Memorials Are Not Allowed

For safety reasons, private memorials are not permitted on state highways. They can distract drivers and create unsafe conditions and may be removed without notice.

More information about the Roadside Memorial sign program, such as eligibility, the application process, sign specifications, placement, duration and removal can be found in the roadside memorial criteria & guidelines

Naming a State Highway or Bridge

Naming a segment of state highway or a bridge is a way to bring to public attention and to honor and recognize a person, organization, or entity that has made a significant contribution to the well-being of others.

Submit applications by October 1 to Molly Mellinger, Nebraska State Highway Commission Secretary. Applications must be submitted through a sponsoring organization or agency. The Commission reviews all submissions, and presentations are made to the Commission in December. Only one name is approved each year. For more information on the process and requirements, see the resources below.
