A cost-efficient, eco-friendly commute option
for Nebraskans without access to large public transit systems.
A Smarter Way to Commute
Since 2017, NDOT has partnered with Commute with Enterprise to provide a statewide vanpool program designed to make daily commutes more convenient, affordable, and environmentally friendly.
What is a vanpool?
A vanpool is a shared ride option where a group of commuters travels together in a vehicle that accommodates at least seven people. Unlike traditional public transportation, vanpools are organized by the commuters themselves, with one member volunteering as the driver.
Why choose vanpooling?
-
Cost Savings: Enjoy up to a $600 monthly subsidy per vanpool, drastically reducing out-of-pocket expenses. Some employees may offer a pre-tax payroll deduction for mass transit.
-
Comfort and Convenience: Travel in a well-equipped, reliable vehicle with luxury features.
-
Flexibility: Month-to-month agreements allow you to adjust your vanpool participation to fit your needs.
-
Accessibility: ADA-compliant vehicles are available for commuters with verified disabilities.
-
Eco-Friendly: Ridesharing helps minimize traffic, reduces environmental pollutants, and can even make your commute more enjoyable
-
Peace of Mind: All vanpools include scheduled maintenance, 24-hour roadside assistance, and comprehensive insurance coverage with no deductible.
Commute distance and time matters. A 2021 Nebraska Department of Labor report shows many workers commute beyond their home counties, with some traveling out of state. Riding together adds up to rider and employer savings while also benefiting the environment. Calculate your impact!
How Does it Work?
Did you know that 1-in-3 employees consider the commute when choosing a job? Your current and potential employees rely on you to offer practical and effective transportation solutions.
NDOT subsidizes commuter-based vanpools up to $400 per month, making this program an affordable option for Nebraskans. Each vanpool accommodates between 7 and 15 passengers, including the driver. With the subsidy, the monthly cost to lease a van ranges from $1,000 to $1,200.
Costs vary based on mileage, group size, etc. For example, a participant sharing a van with 14 other commuters pays only $40 per month, offering significant savings compared to driving a personal vehicle.
The Commute with Enterprise program is supported by federal funding through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program from the Federal Highway Administration and the Section 5311 Formula Grant for rural areas from the Federal Transit Administration.
